George Jones / (1873-1917)

George Jones was born in 1853. Aged twenty, he would travel to America to join the US Navy in 1873.  He served on board the USS Swatara, a screw sloop tall ship, where he assisted in the transport of five teams of scientists to the south pacific to observe the transit of Venus in 1874. He returned home and married Jane Hamson in 1885 and they had seven children. George served on the SS Adela between 1885 and 1917.  He was an able Seaman and worked the lamps. George was 64 when he died.

William Barry who would also die aboard the SS Adela was a nephew of George Jones. George’s wife Jane and William’s mother Mary were sisters. William was only 34 when he died alongside his uncle.
